My Blog on Buzzfeed! - ...The Story of an Anorexic Girl who Got Pregnant

Okay, guys. This is a big deal, at least to me - my blog, well, more specifically, this post, has made it onto Buzzfeed. How freaking cool is that?!

I swear I noticed that my blog was getting more hits than usual...now I know why.

See it here, or if that doesn't work, then here, and tell me what you think - especially about the term "pregorexic."

Brie- I think that we have the same blog timing in our head! Every time I check your blog (which is like ten times a day!) it's like two minutes after you just posted. Fate?? I never comment, mostly because I feel like I might be outed for the crazy blog stalker that I am! Or because it is strange because you really dont know me that well? But the point is this, your blog makes me smile, laugh out loud, brings tears to my eyes, and want to write, every time I read it! You are so fabulous! I tell everyone I know about this amazing blog I follow and how they should read it too! (Hope thats ok, by the way...) Yay for you for being recognized by buzzfeed on your amazing writing! You deserve it 100%. You totally rock my world! Thanks for letting me a piece of furniture in your wierd life....

All my love: Carlie

What is Buzzfeed? This comes directly from their site:

We feature the kind of things you’d want to pass along to your friends: an outrageous video that’s about to go viral, an obscure subculture breaking into the mainstream, a juicy bit of gossip that everyone at the office will be talking about tomorrow, or an ordinary guy having his glorious 15-minutes of fame. And when you read BuzzFeed, you’ll always know the movies, music, and products that are on the rise and worth your time.

congrats B! i must say, my personal fav is the fact that the woman who posted it as the number one story has the unfortunate name of PEGGY WANG! haha

Good for you! :)

Pregorexia is not actually a real term is it? It makes me feel...weird. I never thought of myself that way while pregnant.

Okay...I waited for a few comments to go up before posting my own because I wanted to see what others would say regarding "pregorexic". No one said a word. And, Brie, I'm sensing you need feedback! (perhaps since you commented saying exactly that.)
So, here goes. Doubt its a real word (as in I don't think you'll be seeing it in the DSM IV). I think its a media-made word and my gut tells me its not a good thing.(hence it makes you feel weird). I think the media defines it as someone attempting anorexia while pregnant/striving to maintain ultra-thin appearance even though they may be endangering the life of their unborn child. I don't get the feeling that's what you were doing while pregnant with dear Cade. I didn't take the term "pregorexic" with relation to your blog post as a compliment. Cool that your blog got some attention, but wait...pregorexia?Honestly, the word pissed me off.
Yeah, so, not a good word. Sucks being categorized as such.
Keep writing your blog. Anyone who found you via Buzzfeed will figure it out for themselves. You ain't no pregorexic. (can we delete that word from all memory now?)

Kathy...THANKS SO MUCH.

Yes, I did indeed worry about the term, and I was curious as to what others thought about it.

I agree with you, the term does have some pretty awful connotations. I was talking to Brandon about it last night, and yes, I'm thrilled my blog got some attention, because yeah, that's pretty cool, but I don't want people to think my body size and image was more important than the welfare and life of my child.

However, I came to the conclusion that if anybody clicked on the link and read my blog, they would indeed see that my intentions were nothing but pure and good-hearted, and hopefully, they wouldn't tell their friends over drinks that they read some blog of a psycho lady who wouldn't eat while she was pregnant.

Yes, I struggle with anorexia. Yes, I was thin while pregnant. BUT BUT BUT I ate for my baby. He was perfect, completely heatlhy - and heavier than most babies when they're born.

So, call it what you will, but I, like Kathy, don't define myself as being pregorexic. I'm an individual who suffers from anorexia, but for those nine months, I was simply an individual who was pregnant.

That's all.

"Pregorexic" strikes me the same way "brideorexic" and "momorexic" do - as attempts to make cute buzzwords. They lessen the seriousness of this illness.

All that aside, great post, Brie! Your blog absolutely deserves the attention.

I'm confusorexic.
Still not quite understanding what buzzfeed is.
Maybe I am just dumborexic.
And right now, I am exhaustorexic, and need to take my kids to the poolorexic.

I heart Brie.

I read a couple of article on 'pregorexics' and since they appeared in the Daily Mail (a terrible UK paper) and Fox (a horrible US network), it's hard to get a sense of what exactly they're talking about, other than thin women undereating while pregnant, and even trying to diet while pregnant. I doubt this is a new thing, and I doubt it's something that is even increasing in prevalence.

But it's an incredibly offensive, insensitive label, reducing women to vain specimens who would put their child at risk in pursuit of the perfect bump. The trivialization of something so dangerous - to both mother and child - is just enormously sad. It reminds me of the whole 'drunkorexics', which, once again, reduced those suffering to silly little women who want to get high and stay slim. Really, I find it demeaning and shortsighted and the lack of empathy which flows through this sort of terminology is disheartening.

Brie, you happened to have anorexia whilst you were pregnant. You did all that you could do overcome the demons and you gave birth to a lovely little chap, perfect in every way.

Love you, chicky. I hope you got my return text :)

Standing in the Rain said...

yeah, I'm in agreement. it's an offensive term made up by the media to glorify and mainstream anorexia.

but maybe someone will come to your blog and read about the true struggles of a person with anorexia and learn something...so maybe it's not an entirely horrible thing?

brie said...

I can't get this term out of my head. I was so excited initially, and now...meh. Who wants recognition for something with negative connotations? Boo!

And Laura, BuzzFeed is, like, where it's happening. Get it together!

I just had a thought. Laura, (and anyone else un-cool enough to not know what BuzzFeed is) why don't you Wikipedia it? I'd do it, but my rib hurts when I breathe and my face itches.

Laters!

What does it mean when your rib hurts when you breathe? I get that sometimes and don't know what it means. It's annoying.

brie said...

JB, well for me it usually coincides with my asthma - my ribs in my back hurts near my lungs - all the exertion can even cause muscle soreness, in much the same way your ribs can hurt when you've been coughing for a long time. But other than that...dunno.

Anyone who knows me knows that i am "not with it." However I am proud of you that your writing and its style and content is being noticed. It should be as your talent is obvious(esp. to your Mom.) I was around the entire 9 months of Cade's pre-emergence to life and I know that you did not try to keep nutrients from him. You ate good food. You rarely snacked or ate cookies but you went to all pre-natal exams and took your vitamins and did your best to eat and enjoy the trip. Kudos to you. You were an anorexic who was lucky and blessed enough to get pregnant and the resulting blessing of your "little man" has brought you closer to health and a real happiness than I have ever seen in you.

Hey sis, how does a blog make it into buzzfeed? I'm sure there are millions of blogs . . . . so any idea how yours (or anybodys, for that matter) gets discovered and posted on a website like buzzfeed???

Congrats!

I concur with lisa. bad word.

brie said...

Brett, I'm not sure how my blog got on BuzzFeed. People can tip them off, suggest sites or whatever, so my best guess is that someone read my blog and sent it BuzzFeed...but I dunno for shizzle...?

Paige said...

Brie, I think that's so cool that your blog was recognized! You are an amazing writer.

Buzzfeed is precisely how I found you! A friend sent me the link with the question, "Are you sure this isn't you? Do you have a double life?" Needless to say, I've been coming back daily. :)
