I'M GOING TO FREAKING BE ON NATIONAL TELEVISION - My ED Story

Everybody watch the Morning Show with Mike and Juliet on Wednesday morning! I'll be on the show doing a piece on pregorexia. One of the producers saw my blog piece on either MSN or BuzzFeed. They're flying me and Brandon and Cade to NYC out in the morning to film a little segment about me and my family, then on Wednesday is the actual show. AAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!

So Brie I don't know if you remember me. You were in my ward for a while and we went to high school together. I actually hung out with Brett more. Anyways, I found your blog off of Lauries blog and have been reading it for quite some time now. I have to tell you I love it! You are so witty and quite an excellent writer. I also admire you for all you have had to go through. Good luck on TV. You'll do great!

Wow, holy crap! Cool. You gonna smack down this silly term? I set my DVR. I'm psyched!!

emo said...

Holy crap! I can't believe it, but I can! Brandon called me a few minutes ago and told me your awesome news! It is so crazy! You are gonna make us Breivik's well known people, maybe they'll pronounce it right now! I hear that at my dad's work everyone asks if you are related to my dad!
I feel jealous of you and your writing capabilities and how you get to be on tv! But I am thrilled and look forward to seeing you guys on tv! Good one Brie!

zubeldia said...

oh wow!! I was almost in 20/20 to discuss orthorexia. Ha, I just couldn't do it, though...

You guys will be great...
love, Z

kathy with a k said...

whoa...wtf is orthorexia?
all of these "rexia's" are beginning to sound like names of dinosaurs to me. t-rexia?

Brie, maybe you can bring that up on Wed. while you're on the air.

zubeldia said...

Haha, Kathy... Now, imagine me saying this all British (and I speak with a really really British accent... Brie will tell you!).. Orthorexia is a preoccupation with 'perfect, pure' eating. It is not in the DSM-4 and, for me, it was part of anorexia... It is all quite odd and food - certain foods - take on magical qualities, bestowing purity, or whatever, on particular types of food.

ha, I sound like a complete lunatic :)

kathy with a k said...

Love you Zubeldia! There's no way you could ever sound like a complete lunatic with that British accent! Thanks for the definition.
(and you know, I DO read all your posts with a perfectly delightful Brit. accent)
:)

you're too sweet. If you want to read my blog then shoot me an email. it's neither funny nor cute... :)

Hey Brie, in case you're checking in on your blog I thought I'd throw some advice your way.
The segment of the show is about "Pregorexia", so that's going to be the focus of their questions, comments and how you're presented whether you think of yourself as pregorexic or not.
My advice would be for you to be clear from the get-go where you stand on the whole thing. (which, of course, you may have done already)
Your blog played a role in how they found you, but the segment is not about blogs, blogs about ED's, or great writers of blogs.
Just thinking of you. Want this to be an overall good experience. ('cause it really is damn cool!)
Take Cade to the Central Park Zoo if you can.
XO

i'm glad kathy with a k is all over that. i was thinking about the same things last night, especially the need to be clear where you stand on the issue. also, is this an actual term, pregorexia? is it made up? does anyone know?

Emily said...

Oh cool. I'm glad I'll be able to watch it!

Stacy said...

sorry so late to comment but I am way stoked and although by this time you already did your thing. I really hope you tell it like it is and they know you weren't trying to stay skinny and you were soo all about feeding your growing boy. You are really putting yourself out there to spread the word about what and ED is really like.
you rock!

KC said...

so what are you going to wear?!? They have some AWESOME clothes at Express right now!

Congrats! Give em' hell, girl!

It was cool that you were on tv, but Mike & Juliet seemed so stupid, like they didn't even listen. I got the impression Mike likes to hear himself talk, but I'd never watched the show before.

If you tried to take care of your baby while you were pregnant and lost weight because of problems cause by your anorexia, you weren't pregorexic at all.

And ofcourse they advertise about calorie differences in food and then right after your segment applaud a woman for losing weight after each of her pregnancies, like it's the most amazing and greatest thing... x__x

zubeldia said...

You did so great, honey. I cried watching your poor little body.

Love you

Sarah at Journeying With Him said...

Yes, I noticed the "calorie choices" segment coming up as well and scoffed at the irony. You did a BEAUTIFUL job, sweetheart, and spoke so naturally! I agree that Mike seemed like he wasn't even listening. I don't think that anyone could misunderstand that you were trying to take care of your baby, though. Was it fun?!

Anonymous said...

You did great! So well spoken. Juliet was ok, Mike the no listener was not my favorite.

Krista said...

You did great! What was up with the calorie comparison right during your segment? Just shows how ignorant our world is!

emo said...

You looked beautiful and spoke so well. We loved watching you on tv this morning! We got to watch here in Idaho at 8am, so that was cool. I actually was excited to get up this morning.
I am looking forward to hearing about your experience and how it was!

Jenny Bay said...

Brie, I just happened to look at your blog like right at 9 am - I was so glad! I called my mom and we both watched it. You looked so beautiful and spoke so well, it was so fun to see you on tv! Way to go! Love ya!

Paige said...

Brie, you did such a good job and I'm so proud of you!

Brie--All of the sisters watched it together at M's and it was so dang fun to see you on t.v. First of all, you looked so good, the camera loves you, Second...you rocked!! You did so freakin good. We are proud of you and love you! cya back home!!

Keely said...

You were wonderful! I'm sure it was hard trying to explain eating disorders to people like Mike who seemed pretty ignorant. You looked so awesome and seemed very down to earth. I like how he thought you had a 1-2 pound girl.. ha ha! No seriously though, you did great.

dammit! I'm at work trying to watch the segment right now on the internet, but there's no sound. so I see your beautifulness and of course the pictures for shock effect, but I can't hear a thing! I'll watch as soon as I get home.

Hi Brie,
I just wanted to introduce myself -my name is leslie Goldman and I actually gave the Mike and Juliet producer your name/blog because they contacted me (I'm a body image writer) and I thought you'd be perfect. I hope it all went smoothly - I'm going to check out the segment online right now!
Best of luck,
leslie

You were awesome, Brie! I think Mike and Juliet (especially Mike) were a little ignorant. You did what you had to for your baby and you totally were not pregorexic.

Oh, and, my parents watched it with me and they thought it was a good segment, too. :)

Take care!

love, kristin

Emily said...

Beautiful job, Brie, I watched it on the internet. :) I thought Mike was SO ignorant, and Juliet was only a little better than he was. You did a great job and I am so proud of you. You look awesome, by the way!

Anonymous said...

Agh, I had a meeting at 9, which is when the show was on here. So I have to wait ALL day to watch (I set my DVR to record it). Can I go home now?! I'm so excited to watch!

Tanya said...

Brie,

You did wonderful. I watched on the net. I think you handled it well. I wanted to punch Mike to be honest. He really made a bafoon of himself. He should have researched better or something, seriously. Anyhow...you did what you had to do, and you did the best you could for your baby. Your miracle is here to prove that and he is such a happy baby. I love you and I know its got to be hard doing what you did...going on the show. You did wonderful though and I think you were the perfect person to show that you can have an eating disorder and still put the baby first even if it doesn't always look like you are. Hugs. You are amazing.

Tanya

Jackie said...

You looked absolutely beautiful and handled yourself SO well. I think you put the rest the conception they wanted to push and made clear that you put Cade before your ED. You did SO well my dear. Let's go get tea when you can, call me.

Love, Jax

Stacy said...

I think that you are an anti-pregorexic. You were overpowering your ED to feed Cade and that is awesome and hard for someone with anorexia. Then they had someone who actually tried to not gain weight while pregnant... that is pregorexic (I hate that word)
I watched the segment and you were amazing. They however didn't get it. I have seen their show before and they are both pretty dumb when it comes to the serious topics. They have what they want to say, they say it loud even if it doesn't make sense with what their guests are saying.
Sorry I had so much to say but actually being pregnant right now I think it hits home to trying to do what is right even when it is way hard.

I can't wait to hear about the experience from you.
Love,
Stacy

Standing in the Rain said...

Wow Brie. You did wonderfully! You are SO well spoken and looked natural on TV...new career perhaps? YOu did a great job of explaining ED's and your battle to give little Cade the best you could. (Annoying that the guy thought Cade was a girl named Cate, huh?).

Anyhow, great job. You are awesome and I've never even met you!

Jackie said...

I watched the segment again Brie and you just didn't fit into the show's "pregorexic" theme and it came across so clearly. Mike and Juliet were idiots - stating that the term meant you became anorexic DURING pregnancy, yet it was clear you were anorexic BEFORE your pregnancy and were actually in recovery during your pregnancy. They looked like uneducated idiots - you looked like a brave, educated, intelligent mom who did what she had to do to have a healthy baby. You were a square peg they were trying to fit into a circular hole and it didn't work. I am so proud of you. Really. I hope you are proud of yourself. Please call me when you can my dear.

Love,
jax

Hi Brie,

I was able to watch the segment with you in it online, and I was so impressed with how poised and well-spoken you are, and how well you told your story and fielded those idiotic questions posed to you by Mike and Juliet. (I actually wanted to yell at the screen at them "You obviously just don't get it, fools! Her baby's needs DID trump her own needs! Oh, and her baby is BOY!")

But yes, awesome, incredible job! You should be so proud of yourself!

Best,
Eve

KC said...

you did pregtastic! I've decided to add preg- to everything instead of -orexia. So mike was definitely a preg-tard, but you, you were a pregagenius. Thanks for doing your best to clear up their misconceptions when you were actually permitted to speak. So do you get any cool rewards or vacation time for going? Nice outfit choice. :) Come back and tell us all how it went. you were so poised!

brie said...

Hello everyone!

Wow, I'm so pleased (and overwhelmed) with all the feedback I have recieved through so many of you via email and my blog. I'm actually watching the segment right now...

There's so much I want to say, and I'm going to watch it a few more times and perhaps comment later, and I'll also be posting a blog about it, as well. :)

In general, I'm okay with how I did...I don't think I made too much of a fool out of myself, and my biggest wish is that I could have said more - specifically regarding how well Cade is doing now, and how much I ate the term pregorexia. Oh wellsies...

More later! Much love. :)

brie said...

Woops. "Ate the term pregorxia?" Methinks there's some irony in there...lol...I meant HATE the term!

zubeldia said...

You did so wonderfully, chica.
