Friday's Foibles

I am glad this week is (mostly) over.  This week has been hard.  Really emotional.  This week could have made baby dolphins cry.  It was THAT bad.

Well...not bad, per se, but just...up and down.  And I will be the first to admit that I am terrible at handling negative emotions.  Like, if someone else were to feel sad or angry, they'd probably just be okay with it, feel the emotions, and move on, but not me.  I get all pissy and anxious that I'm feeling sad/angry/whatever and then fight those emotions like hell.  Which of course only makes them worse, more intense, and things exponentially harder for me.  Oh well.  One day I'll learn.

I Cade gave his report on Abraham Lincoln today.  It went really well I think.  Of course I did most of the talking, because what on earth would a 5 year old say about a dead president?  But Cade did great holding up the pictures, and he was just beaming - smiling from ear to ear, and I thought that was pretty cute.  I'm glad it's over, because let me tell you, a 5 minute presentation on good ol' Abe stressed me out more than it should have.  Cade didn't sweat it at all of course, but that's because the little stinker knew I was going to do all the work!

Ah, man.  Panda Express has never tasted so bad as it did, today, at lunch.  Normally I love me some fried ricey and orange chicken, but not today.  Okay gross moment, I cut into the chicken and it looked, like...PURPLE.  And just...WRONG.  And NOT CHICKENY.  And now I'm sad that I'll never eat there again.  But I have a feeling it'll take me at least 3784 months to go back, which is exactly what happened when I went to Arby's that one time and found a black toenail in my beef 'n cheddar.  This is not a joke.

I'm on a total horror kick lately.  It started by reading 11/22/63, which is not a horror novel at all, but by Stephen King, which makes you think it'll be a horror novel.  (It was FABULOUS by the way, and I would highly recommend it!)  Anyway, that piqued my interest about King's other novels, and decided I needed to read The Shining, because that's an iconic American Classic, despite the fact the movie really sucked, and why hadn't I read it earlier, really, especially as I consider myself a Reading Connoisseur?  So I read the book - nay, dear readers, devoured it - and now I can't stop.  I'm currently reading It, and Brandon and I have cycled through several stupid horror series at night, like the Paranormal Activity series, and also the Scream series, which is so stupid, but whatevs, me likes the scarruh stuff lately.  Any good scary books/movies to recommend?

Hope you all have a great weekend.  Brandon and I have a family EQ activity to go to at the church tonight, but other than that, no real plans.  Maybe I'll try to save some baby dolphins, since so many others cried this week cuz it sucked so much.  Maybe.  :)

I think you should go see Lady in Black (that new movie with the Harry Potter kid) when it comes out... I watched the trailer and since I'm chicken I want someone else to see it and tell me if it's worth watching. :) I don't actually know when it comes out though. Hm...

The movie Event Horizon will scare the living sh*t out of you. But it is also a horrible movie. Don't ever watch it.

But seriously, if you want to lose your mind, watch it.

Oh gal. That toally sucks that you had a rough week (and that baby dolphins cried. Do they even have tear ducts?). Anyhow.... I am glad that you survived giving Cades report- I mean, helping him give his own report. Cute kiddo!

Hang in there. I shall be sending an email full of love here rather soon.

Love your guts...

Woman in Black was AMAZING! I also recommend Dawn of the Dead (the original, from 1978), and The Exorcist (the original), if you haven't seen those yet. Rosemary's Baby is also awesome. I agree with Lisa that Event Horizon is intense and you should watch it.

DARK TOWER!!! Definitely King's best work ever. Almost all of his other books make allusions to that series, so you miss a lot of inside jokes and references if you read much of his work without knowing DT. When I finished the 3rd book at 10:30 one night, I literally loaded the dog in the car and went to the bookstore in my pjs so I could but the 4th one right away to keep reading half the night.

I had an "aw" moment when I saw how Cade was holding the side of your chair in that picture, too cute.

Just as a disclaimer, I didn't get "into" the first DT book very much, but had already bought the second one so I tried it out anyway...and that one absolutley hooked me. So just sayin, if the first one doesn't pull you in, it's worth it to stick with it for the second.

'Insomnia' is probably my next favorite King, and has some significant DT tie-ins, as does 'Hearts in Atlantis'. Oh oh and 'The Stand.'

He really is a master at characterization. His 'On Writing' is really more of an autobiography than just a book about writing, I absolutely loved it.

When it comes to his newer stuff, I loved 'Under the Dome' but wasn't a fan of 'Lisey's Story.' I really disliked 'Dreamcatcher.'

Alright I will quit hijacking the comments now, sorry! I likes book talk.

Cammy, I love the book talk! Did you read either the shining or it? Curious as to what you thought. I'm in the middle if it right now and really like it. I highly recommend you read 11/22/63...it was soooooo good!

I really, really liked 'The Shining.' I wasn't a big fan of 'It', but I think it just wasn't quite as tight as some of his other books I'd read at that point. 'Desperation' wasn't super great. I have liked a lot of his short story collections, though. I loved 'The Talisman', and the follow up, 'Black House' wasn't as great as that but was still good. Those two, 'Hearts in Atlantis,' and 'Insomnia' are the most directly linked to the DT series, so read that first if you plan to read those.

My freshman year of college I scored a huge box of King books for about $10 on eBay and went on a total binge of his writing for a while, lol. I still have a few from that box that I haven't gotten to (Rose Madder, Carrie, Pet Semetary, Gerald's Game).

Oh and 'Salem's Lot' (one of his earliest) is good and I'd recommend reading it before the 5th Dark Tower book, there's a tie-in you'll miss if you haven't read SL before that.

Oh from recent stuff, 'Duma Key' was okay, not my favorite but a TON better than 'Lisey's Story.' And I guess they can't all be the favorite, right?

I have been dying to read 11/22/63 but haven't been able to afford it in hardcover, want to get to it soon though!
