Stressed About Swelling

Hey, have a question and thought I'd throw it out to the Blogxygeners for opinions.

Remember my little tumble that resulted in a really nasty bruise and scrape?  Well, almost a week later, the swelling has not gone down.  And it still hurts like all hell, but that doesn't surprise me much, considering it's still bruised.  But a few people today were telling me that the swelling should have gone down by now, and that if it hasn't, there's a possibility of maybe having a hair-line fracture, or something?  Also, it's still incredibly sore and tender, and I'm not sure how normal that is for going on a week.  So, do I go get it x-rayed?  Or wait a few days to see if the swelling goes down?  Or do I not do anything since the docs won't do anything about a hair-line fracture anyway?

I'm not big on going to the doc, so my first reaction is to just not go and wait for things to heal up, but if I'm like causing damage by not going, then I will.  What think ya'llsies?

I vote get it x-rayed... because you just never know.

Same thing happened to me. Fell while roller blading onto my wrist. Swollen and painful so finally decided to get an X-ray. Turned out that my wrist was broken. Dr told me that one way to tell (sometimes) if something is broken is if it feels heavy. My arm felt heavy when I would lift it.

hmm. I are you icing it and taking ibuprophen for the swelling? Are you wrapping it with an ace bandage to provide a little compression to the area? Are you elevating your arm for a bit (resting above your heart) while icing?

I would hold off on getting x-rayed. Wounds over the bone take extra time to heal due to the limited amount of muscle and blood supply in that direct area. Honestly (only because it is expensive to pay your co-pay to just find out you have a sore bruise...) I would give it a couple more days and do the things listed above. RICE- rest, ice, compress (ace bandage), elevate.

i can relate a little... i stubbed my pinky toe on the base of an exercise machine. a few weeks later - walking in flip flops as much as possible during a record-breaking cold winter - i finally went to the doctor because it was still swollen and hurting. they x-rayed it and it was a hairline fracture. they couldn't do much for it, so they let it just heal itself. that, however, was a pinky toe.

so... i guess i really don't know. my initial thought is, it wouldn't be bad to get it x-rayed just to see. but you could also google 'radius or ulna hairline fractures' or something and see if there's much that doctors can do or if they'll just let it heal itself.

one reason i couldn't tell my toe was broken was because it was still straight, so i think if you're arm isn't deformed, then the break might not be too bad.

... i don't know though! i'm not a doctor...

sorry for the super-long comment.

I'd say go - it took me 4 days to go after I tripped and then found out I broke 3 toes and 2 bones in my foot - it felt better with the walking cast (though I passed in the crutches they never made it out of the trunk)

Hey B,
I vote for the X-ray too. Your arm may not be broken, but you may have a fracture. Good luck! :)

My sister had a hairline fracture in her wrist and they casted her. I would totally get it x-rayed.

Agreed! I vote go get it x-rayed.
P.S. DO you still see Dr. P? If so- do you like her? I am going to start seeing her next week and am trying to figure out whether or not I should be terrified out of my mind!?!?!?!?!?!

I'd suggest going to get an x-ray. Granted, there's always the chance they're going to declare it a sore bruise and just wrap it, but if you have a fracture and don't know about it, there can be serious consequences of improper healing (including nerve damage to the area, it not having full strength in future, etc.). It's just better to know for sure.
